Ieva Ciocyte
Born in 1987 in Lithuania, In 2012 Ieva graduated from the from the University of Manchester with a degree in Architecture. Having studied at the Vilinus Academy of Art she has a passion for academic drawing and watercolour. Both of these practices are visible in her striking horse series.
Amazingly Ieva draws her subjects from memory. Her enthusiasm for the technical and the anatomical, teamed with a childhood spent around horses, has led to a nearby obsession with these creatures.
‘Horses express for me a great sense of freedom, power and sublime beauty. They hold a special attraction, not found elsewhere.’
Using simple materials of ink or watercolour, and working in monochrome, the result is one of strength and bold empowerment. She is however, able to communicate character and small snippets of narrative with her carefully planned compositions. ‘I try to find a balance between light delicate lines and heavy black spots. I like the graphical expression that working in monochrome gives me.’
