“I am interested in capturing a precious, jewel-like quality within my paintings whilst also retaining a free, abstract feel. Much of my inspiration comes from Romanticism and the sublime. Although I don’t believe that nature can be replicated in its intricacy and intensity, I want to capture its sublime aspect in a contemporary way. I do this by depicting images such as mountains and forests, inherently Romantic images, as simplified motifs.
I have always been fascinated by shapes and silhouettes, light and shadow. Colour is another key aspect in my work, and I aim to provoke a positive emotive response from the viewer through the use of contrasting colours. I often use washes of paint, built up in layers, using hand made stencils in the shape of natural forms as blockers so that the underlying colour can be revealed after the second is applied. In this way a rich, multifaceted image can be created.
My landscapes are inspired by real as well as imagined settings; The Alps, Brittany and the Lake District amongst others. My paintings represent escapism, from everyday life into the natural world.”
