Emmesse is best known for his surreal cityscapes. He is often told that he had a perfectly good painting until he painted something silly on it. He accepts this but still feels compelled to do it. He even feels under strict offers to do so. He suggests that this is Emmesse telling his alter ego to do it.
“I feel as if Manchester is just my backdrop for the emotional feeling or thought that I am trying to convey. I could just as easily be inspired to do paintings that incorporated another backdrop wherever that may be. I am often unsure what I am thinking or feeling and what I am trying to convey visually, it’s almost as if there is part of me that knows and I just hold the paintbrush and see what happens.
