12/08/2010 - Live Manchester August - Emmesse - Surreal World |
Alicia Walker visits the impassioned artistry of one of Manchester''s most provocative artists, Emmesse.
Apparitions in Piccadilly Gardens, a curious pink reptile in St. Ann''s Square, a blue man playing yo yo atop a building in Spinningfields, an underwear clad deep sea diver in Albert Square; these are some of the bizarre elements you will find appearing almost at ease in their absurdity and fitting right in to Emmesse''s otherwise true depictions of some of the city''s most recognizable landmarks.

01/07/2010 - Live Manchester July 2010 |
Graffiti has a bad name. Unsightly scrawl across buildings is a blight on most major cities. Councils fight hard against the people who “tag” urban areas and will convict those who vandalise public property.
It’s not quite this simple though. Debate was raised when a couple of years ago street artists, Thomas Dolan and Thomas Whittaker, had their sentences quashed. They had covered trams, trains and stations in large images, lettering and graphics, which eventually were deemed not to be offensive. Even judges recognize that a talented street artist can transform a grimy, depressing industrial scene into something of beauty.

08/03/2010 - Live Manchester March - Art-The New asset Class? |
An article written by Mike Smith on the way we see art as an investment. "I specialise in emerging talent, so buying the next big name is top priority. Large gains are possible, and it does happen, but you should never buy solely for investment. In my experience, the people who have bought with pound signs in their eyes, often grow to resent the artwork and their decision to buy it in the first place.

30/01/2010 - Fine Art for the home - Live Manchester Jan/Feb |
A page article focussing on how to choose the right artwork for your home. "Dai paints for himself. The figures he depicts are mysterious, moody and make no concession to the latest fad or fashion. Is his style cool? Maybe, but Dai David would be painting musicians whether they were or not. He is influenced, but not controlled by society. He is aware of feedback but this doesn’t change his own path.
Also on his own path, Michael Gutteridge is an artist with a formidable reputation for individiuality and vision. He paints a twisted, distorted and surreal Manchester, full of nervous energy. He has a hard core of fans but his style will jar with some of the art buying public. Is this the Marmite of the art scene?
There is a division in the art world that you may not be aware of. It’s a division that separates galleries, artists and customers and goes to the heart of how we see art and what we use it for."

Paul McCartney, Ronnie Wood, Ringo Star and even Jimi Hendrix have all picked up paintbrushes to express themselves in a way other than playing an instrument. John Squire was best known for being the guitarist in the Stone Roses but is now one of Manchester’s most successful artists in his own right. John has inspired the latest breed of artists, Danny Cawley being one of them."

Meeting Danny Cawley for the first time you''d guess he was either in a band or a creative of some kind or other.
Though he counts Damon Gough as a close friend and is in regular contact with the likes of the charlatans, i am Kloot and other notable local acts, it was art rather than music that proved an escape for Cawley - A move that has paid dividends as his reputation grows apace.

He also won a slew of awards, including photographer of the year, for his coverage of the IRA bomb that exploded in Manchester in 1996.
